The Competition Commission of India is unlikely to take up the Adani Group case suo motu. CCI chairman Ranveet Kaur indicated that it would not take cognizance of the media reports in this regard. “We have to have some information filed before us, and then the commission takes action on that,” she said. Kaur was in Kolkata on Friday to attend a workshop on competition law organised by the Merchant’s Chamber of Commerce & Industry.
On whether the Adani matter falls under the purview of CCI, Kaur said, “The CCI is governed by the Competition Act. It is meant to promote and sustain competition. If there is any matter which falls into the domain of the Competition Act, then it comes to the Competition Commission.”
Asked about the WhatsApp case in which CCI fined Meta Rs 213 crore, Kaur said that any appeal, if filed by Meta, would have to go to NCLAT. “There is no provision of appealing before CCI,” she added.
Earlier, Kaur explained that for penalising an outfit which had no revenue model in India, CCI looks into its global turnover.
